Janis Chan is not just another celebrity – she radiates intellectual beauty from the inside-out. She became a vegetarian for the animals, at the same time appreciating its environmental benefits. She feels a responsibility to promote vegetarianism, “The society has a lot of misunderstandings towards vegetarianism. They often think it’s not nourishing enough, that’s why I need to eat more healthily to influence more people.” Adopting a vegetarian diet not only brings her good health but also gives her an intellectual charm.
Janis started adopting a vegetarian diet since university. At that time, people thought she was doing so to maintain a good figure. Janis, however, does not agree. “I never think skinny equals beauty – I think people who are healthy are the most beautiful, while eating plant-based foods makes me healthy both physically and psychologically.” As a supporter of body-mind balance, Janis believes the key to staying fit is to exercise three times a week and to eat smartly. “To improve body figure and skin, food accounts for 70% and exercise for 30%. I never go on a diet. Instead, I eat mindfully, and I always pay attention to choosing nutritious food. For example, eating too much processed sugar will accelerate skin ageing, while having too much sodium will lead to water retention and bloating. Therefore, I try to choose foods that are low in sugar and sodium.”
“I exercise not to lose weight, but to train up my body so that I can have more strength to do what I like.”
Janis is now following a personal trainer. She focuses on the intake of protein and iron. ”You need an adequate amount of protein in each meal to train up your muscles. I make Beyond Meat chicken strips stir-fry with bell pepper. I also add Superfood powder into my smoothie for breakfast. I like girls with strength, and eating a plant-based diet gives me the strength.”
Vegan dessert is the best comfort food
When doing outdoor or overseas shooting, Janis never forgets to bring her own energy bar, common good nuts, and Cruncha ma-me snacks to fuel herself up. As a huge snacker, Janis makes an effort to only snack on healthy food. “Nuts are the healthiest among all, but I sometimes eat Jealous Sweet candies as well.”
Janis took a French cuisine class to learn about professional baking, so that she can improve the vegan version of these recipes. “Dessert is my comfort food, but the amount of butter and sugar makes it hard for me to comfortably indulge in them. Natural and vegan desserts, meanwhile, do not have this problem.” When asked about the secret to radiate beauty from the inside-out? Janis took her time to think and said, “When I know that no animals are hurt and sacrificed because of me, when I know that I can help reduce carbon emission, that is when I am the most relaxed and at peace. I smile genuinely, and that makes me the most beautiful.”
